water system - excessive noise

Does anyone know if it is possible to reduce the amount of noise generated from a cold water tank?
When i do the washing up, or run a bath, the amount of noise coming the water system in the house is deafening - i am sure the noise is getting louder over the last few months.
if it is something that can be resolved - can anyone recommend a plumber?
