UPDATE: SOLL Leisure membership warning

Apparently the monthly payment membership used to be 'pay as you go' with no contract. This changed some time last year, however some of the sales staff don't appear to have known about it. I bought mine in October at Didcot Wave.

The confusion resulted in my being told very clearly, verbally and in writing, that there was no contract, but signing a piece of paper, which turns out to have a very nasty contract on the back. It talks about debt collection agencies if you don't cough up.

I am pretty sure the staff member concerned didn't know that the small print was on the back any more than I did, she'd hardly have written and signed the opposite on headed paper if she did. I am very lucky I asked for this clarification and kept it. I expect other people bought in similar circumstances around the same time, and have no proof.

If you bought a membership last year, check the back of the blue carbon copy of the paper you signed. If you were under the impression that you were on a pay-as-you-go penalty free arrangement, make a complaint, you are not. This kind of mis-selling is a serious offence, and the OFT ought to help if SOLL do not.
