After my first visit to 'the wally' i shall not be returning. There's not a lot of choice in didcot, and to be fair 'the wally' is probably one of the nicer ones, 4th in my list of pubs to visit. However through rumour and from what i saw last night the landlord is out for himself and doesn't give a .... About pubs and managers helping each other out. Keep serving those 17 year olds and we'll see who keeps there jobs longest.

wow! we have just seen the photos on the wbsite. Sincere congratulations to all the team at the pub. We reliefed the pub 3 years ago for a few weeks and are aware that the few would always try to ruin the good that is taking place. Congratulations to Dave and all the hard work that he has done. good to see johnny g is still doing his thing. Again, well done, the pub now looks great.

Anyone taking over a pub has to put in money that belongs to them. So they can make it work, even by bulling themselfs up like this sad one

My two boys spotted the big truck outside yesterday in my fathers car, not happy as they forced me to walk them across town, from ladygrove especially to see it then off to the park. Does look really cool though!

I would just like to say that I have been drinking in the Wally for nearly 7 years, I've seen it neglected my the brewery, a new manager in every other week, managers that didnt care, they got paid regardless. Then Dave came along, Spent HIS money on what anyone would call a waste of time/money and has turned it around, Spent HIS money to make sure you all have a good night!! I know there are people in there that I dont like(cant stand) but I dont talk to them, you dont have to like everyone. You tell me where on earth there is a pub that doesnt have a bit of trouble when the drinks are flowing?? I want to say a huge well done to Dave and wish him luck with his future plans, I'm looking forward to seeing the changes as they unfold thanks Dave

I really think branding it "The Wally Arms" is doing you no favours, it gives the impression that it is downmarket, yes it has been called that as a slang term for many years, but don't people also call Broadways "Broadmoores"?
Speaking as someone from out of town, and speaking to other people, the name "The Wally" makes it sound like it's full of idiots.
Maybe you could call it "The Retard" or "The Moron"?

A review for a change....
Ok peeps, Food is fine, staff are great, drinks are reasonable prices, weekend doorman and landlord Dave are approachable on a personal level rather than untouchable which all aids a better atmosphere than some other pubs :o)
Food could be a wider range, and some decor adjustments are in slight need.. but this is an on going project so understandable.. soo watch this space. It allready fills up well at wekends which shows it is a popular pub.
I keep coming back for all the above reasons.
Well done guys n gals

I am shocked you know more about me than I do about myself, whom left what money? You know nothing about my past employment or of companies owned or past ventures, houses etc... My money I worked hard for. I can't even remember seeing you in the meeting with Punch Taverns regarding The Wally? No deals, or agreements to spend money on the place were set, Its a fully repairing lease which means its up to the new company running the pub (me) to make its own decisions, if anything Punch are telling me to stop spending and put money in the bank to buy another pub off them.. My price for beer to buy is the same as The Wheatsheaf (I expect), for those that do not know, Punch Taverns own both Premises (or at least the main lease not the building at The Wally) my GP at sale to the end user (you) is my own regard (cheaper drinks is my own business decision, take advantage of it and not debate it) if you know about Punch, then you will know they do not GIVE things away or do deals. As for The Towers, I gave notice in April last year in order take over The Wally May Bankholiday, The Towers ceased trading in August? If you're calling me a thief then I will gain your IP address and details from the web master... really. You clearly know nothing about that either. Come and have a chat the door is always open, without all this cloak and dagger, there is too much gossip in this town. I speak the truth, and will tell it when asked a question. As for The Optic, speak to Tom from Broadways because I believe I was chatting with him when that post was written. I would say I am honest and genuine and commited to the community. I have gained quite a few qualifications in my now chosen industry, knowledge now put into practice at The Wally (gained cask marque for beer quality already and more awards to come I am sure). leading to my proposition, I believe the "old pub" just needed a fresh approach. Either way, the town now has a clean pub with friendly staff and a warm welcome, offering good beer at a reasonable price, that I hope will go from strength to strength. What more can you want? Let me know??
People, this is a review site of the Pub, hosted by a company nothing to do with the pub, its not to have comment about the owner. The Wally has its own forum now so I do not need this one active, maybe bla bla is right. This is quite entertaining though! Keep personal thoughts to yourselves, or come in for a chat if you have an issue with me. The Wally was up for sale for a year before I brought it, ANY OF YOU COULD HAVE DONE WHAT I DID. No one wanted to. I am trying to keep the pub as it always has been, it has its own charm to those that drink there, It is not for everyone. I hope its just cleaner & improved (just two days after a busy weekend the carpets were cleaned & pub bleached throughout, maintaining standards) and hopefully The Wally offers more things to do now, Skysports, Satanta, state of the art disco / music etc... plus Coca-cola (not pepsi) and extra cold beers throughout the range offered, increased range of foods from local sellers combined with a new chef with fresh ideas.
Posted by Ex Regular — 08/05/2008 at 7:32
What's all this about Dave spending loads of money for "our" benefit??? Everyone knows the bloke was given it all on a plate. First he was left all his money! Then I bet he pocketed a few quid from the Towers... THEN.. he was actually given the lease for free cos the brewery couldn't get rid of it.. on the condition that he spent a certain amount in the first 3 years, that's why his beers cheap (for now).. They're keeping him sweet! Give it time. And for those of you that have been brainwashed into thinking he's such a lovely bloke... He'll show his true colours one day soon...

Same old same old on this forum. If I was Dave I would email the webmaster of this site and shut down this page. Let’s face it, all anyone does here is moan here. Numbers speak for themselves, we all learn by experience, well those of us that are humans that is and those of us that were brought up to respect other people and there property. Yes mistakes have been made and Dave will learn from these and progress, I assure you he will not be beaten into submission and will not give in to the idiots of this town that are just out to cause trouble. He is a decent honest man and too bloody nice for his own good at times, but that is the way he his, be warned though, he is no fool. Nice comment to end this forum on Dave. Shut it down and then see if the people will come in and speak to you and air there views face on, do not think so, do you. Oh and no spelling mistakes in this one.

Pop in the pub and tell David more information of the 3 incidents beside the hair pulling incident, which I saw him remove one of the parties concerned pulling hair himself shortly after removing the other persons (males) connected in the same incident, they all seemed to meet up again out the front of the pub in the broadway, with the police there? That problem was before 12 just after most people got there, so not even past the normal hours of Karaoke on a Sunday. With your other details of the other problems you mention I am sure CCTV can be used to get these people dealt with (if there were more, not counting this one thing as individual issues). Talking about them on here does not really prevent these individuals causing problems again in The Wally, Oak, Wheatsheaf or any other pub. Its the individuals that need to be sorted, I know for a fact the CCTV in The Wally is one of the best installed. I only saw two incidents and was there all night. I think the doormen and Dave did very well given how busy it was. Great Night Out, thank you all at The Wally and The DJ's you rock! Hope we get to do it again next bank holiday? If people didn't want to be in The Wally they wouldn't have been there so the numbers speak for themselves. Never seen a pub in Didcot that busy, keep up the good work Dave and Jenny.

As many of you are unaware as to the cost of putting on an event and refurbishing a pub, you might think twice about what you say when your made aware that your getting cheap drinks, free entry, a decent DJ or 2, extended hours and a safe and friendly atmosphere ( apart from the odd person who are dealt with quickly ) which is all paid for by DAVID BREWERTON out of his own pocket NOT THE PUBS MONEY!!!!!!
Ask yourself why does he do that?
Why not charge an entry fee, raise the price of drinks etc. to cover his costs!
The Answer!!!......
Because he's just like you and me, he wants somewhere where you can by a drink without being overcharged, where you can go and have a good night without having to pay to get in, where you can listen to a decent dj and have a dance without you having to pay his wages through overpriced drinks and entry fees. But the most important thing is that you know that if there is any trouble it will be dealt with quickly and as safely as possible!
Next time you think about making a comment, stop and think about what ive told you.....
Because he's doing everything he does for your benefit not to make money!!
JUST THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!!
Posted by A n other — 05/05/2008 at 23:16
You seem to bang on about Broadways Door charge. But it buys a safty feeling. We'v (6 girls)used it for years & know the doormen same ones each week they do not take any s*it and deal with problems They have been there a long and know most of this idots around town. There is NO door charge there befor 10,30. Club Rio is £5
Posted by David — 05/05/2008 at 22:10
The person concerned will be dealt with on Pubwatch as with any offenders at the pub, that is if I gain support of other licensees. The Lee Hamblin incident will be dealt with in due course I have extensive CCTV at the pub and both parties actions were recorded.
The issue with the pub forecourt is that EVERYONE uses it as a cut through, I have proposed to replace the old fencing and put in place new after consultation with local police. At that time persons entering the "site" can be managed, this will include young people passing through and in some cases pitching up on the way too and from school. As said in my previous post, a lot of new faces Sunday, Friday was trouble free and we traded till the same hours as with the previous events in total now 15 events have taken place until 3am & end of August bank holiday 2007 till 6am problems as stated are minimal. Registered doorstaff are employed at my expense (with no charge to the customer). You cannot presume numbers. The Wally Arms is not for everyone, that is why we have so many options of pub types in the town. If you feel so strongly of it being "a dump" then you will not respect the pub, this is where issues begin in some cases. I here too many times "its just The Wally", its my money paying for the alterations, new furniture which in some cases has already been damaged, If you want a better Wally Arms with nice floors etc... please support me positively. I offer you a more reasonable priced fare not far from JD Wetherspoons prices (the site I visited). I could just hike the prices charge door entry and pocket the cash but I choose not too! I have lived in the town all my life. I am a local resident, I took the lease on the pub to change it from what it had become through years of neglect. Over the weekend I patrolled the local area ensuring noise levels of music were at a minimum also football chanting ceased (background noise). Issues were dealt with in a very quick time, CCTV footage proves this with offenders ejected quickly. I understand this is the buzz thing at the moment. Please if anyone has concerns come and see me I am always around ask at the bar for David Brewerton. Especially if you are a local resident, as said already this pub is in my road, your concerns are also my concerns my family has lived in that road since it was built. I am commited to sorting out these problems for everyone. I will consult further with Local Police regarding future events. I thank all staff for prompt service, regulars for helping with glass collection & the police for prompt assistance when required.

Posted by concerned customer — 05/05/2008 at 13:53

What about the customer assaulted by Lee hamblin the other week are you doing something about that?
I as a local resident will be objecting to anymore late licences, I thought you were supposed to have no outside drinking or entry after midnight. The lunatics have taken over the asylum????

Sorry to all for closing early Sunday, as always the few (one) messes things up for the many. Nice to see so many new faces to The Wally whom I have not seen in here (since I have taken over). Fortunately I would say this is an isolated incident in what has been a reasonably faultless past few months. Please wait to see the effect this has on future events at bank holidays. My primary goal is safety for everyone. Saturday:- My advertising was for Friday and Sunday till 3am in the Ladygrove Mag, Didcot Review and in the pub its self. If you were up for party at that time on Saturday then the Broadways public house had license till 2am on that night, so you could as you stated been accomodated with no problems I can see there apart from a walk and door charges.
Checking SODC licensing will inform my intension for Saturday. Sorry if those attending were upset but it boils down to cost to put the event on.

Ah but if you remember, when you walked into the oak before it was refurbished, you were met with a smile and locals did not give you evils, I hope once the wally is done it does not turn into the new place for the hero's to gather, bring on the pole dancers and the bikes meets, up the monster truck love and fair play to the landlord for the effort so far. oh and we all know he does not lick the other side of the stamp. I'll be back in a few weeks to drink the great real ale they serve.

Its great that the new management are trying to do something different with the pub, espeically trying to take on the even bigger hole that is Broadways, but that website is crazy.
Crazy. Money would have been better spent on new carpets.

you get started on by some coked up chavs (which they no doubt they do openly in the toilet)and you get barred-funny that!!
Or even better you get beaten up and the landlord destroys the CCTV footage how can you live with that guilt??
Pubwatch is there for a reason so us normal people can have a quiet drink without getting a glass in our face, but for some reason at 'THE WALLY' thats the right thing to do...

Posted by pub fella — 02/03/2008 at 17:32
Went down here for first time in over a year on sat night. there was a smell of sick by the bar not very nice! and the carpet was wet and dirty to be honest it was a dive in there, hope comdey dave can sort this out soon as he said he was going to when he took over but all he seemed to do was pretend to mix on the dj decks when it was obvious he just had a cd on. aint going back in a hurry can tell you that.

Does anyone know if the landlord is gay? Met him for the first time last weekend and we got on really well but was gutted when told he was straight. Maybe he swings both ways? Can someone please find out for me?...X
Posted by Anita Cock — 09/01/2008 at 17:28
Glad this place is still open as it only attracts local drunks and chavs. Didcot has something for everybody. Cheers.

Hello all... i love reading this forum catching up on the opinions of the lovely members of dicot have about the wally it does make me chuckle some!!! Even though i have now moved to abingdon i still regard the wally as my local believe it or not. Abingdon is just not worth venturing out in stupid pubs full of stupid people. Merry christmas to the wally family i love you all and will try and make an effort to come to the pub more often, it's just difficult on a bike in the ice. See u all soon love to all x x x

I'm down here most weekends if anyone wants a scrap?
Posted by Johnny G — 09/12/2007 at 17:58
Hello everyone, Just a quick note to say, enjoy all the christmas parties, disco's and karaoke going on. And also to let you know, the Wallingford Arms is having a ROCK NIGHT, yes a ROCK NIGHT, on the 8th January 2008. Tell all, goths, rockers, punks, the lot. If it works, and it's really busy, it could happen alot more often. Take care of yourself and each other. :-)

Just reading the reviews posted, at home with a bottle of whiskey (not drinkig all of it).i admit i have not been to this pub for a couple of years in the evening but once during the day after a corse. is it still right that if someone is on the pub watch he can come into your pub if he is on probation?
It sounds to me that some people have a grudge against the wallingford arms or who ever has the licence. Drink or no drink i apolagise for my spelling but not for my opinion. A note to the landlord. It sounds like you are trying hard to make this a good pub again. BEST OF LUCK
MAFFO

Really ? you think its a good place no amount of paint will detract from the fact its the same old pub wit the same old faces just raise it to the ground.

Nice to hear people enjoyed Halloween in here!
As i did also.... It was nice to see they actually had a DJ (he was great) not just a computer as usual.

Do any of you know who the DJ was as Im sure I've seen him in another Pub before?

Hwy Guys and Gals, just thought i'd say hi, hope your liking the Karaoke on sundays, it's slowly getting back to the way it used to be, and for that i say thanks. If your in the waly try the windy miller shot, it's really really good. peace out, love to you all

Halloween, was good. It could have been better but that like most things in the wally is only gonna come with time, I hear the landlord is doing stuff to the pub, as i said give him time. I'm no fan of the disco being on daily but hey thats the landlords place to decide that. I wonder if a dress code might help with the certain respect issues in the pub, as in no work wear, no sports wear after a certain time, I don't requent the place very often but when I and my partner do I enjoy the time spent there. Keep working on it landlord, it's slowly getting much better

great to hear the wally is doing well. we reliefed it about 2 years ago and are really pleased to hear that someone else is trying to make the wally the place to be in didcot and that they obviously care about the pub and the locals that use it.
hope everything goes well for the new landlord as it seems that he only wants the best for the pub, just as did when we were there.
Posted by dont know — 15/10/2007 at 19:00
any chance of some new girls in the pub as we are all bored with the same old ones every night. thank you!!
Posted by K — 12/10/2007 at 11:37
Yes I've never understood why the wally feels they need to have door staff. I could only hazard a guess that the type of clientele they attract need to be watched quite closely.
Posted by craig — 11/10/2007 at 12:57
ha ha ha doormen with ear pieces max n paddy (can you hear me now) wheres brian potter any way how come ure the only pub wit doormen other than broadys
Posted by David Brewerton — 09/10/2007 at 22:45
The venue has always of recent years had a 12 midnight or 1am licence. Since taking over running The Wallingford Arms I have implemented SIA registered Door Staff, on station Friday, Saturday and Sundays. These persons patrol the boundary and local residences with radio link making the whole area safer. Lighting has also been improved, with plans to repair rear car park lighting, which failed over 3 years ago. Also intended installation of more cameras to all outside areas, helping and increasing the pubs standing with review to the licensing objectives.
Automatic door closers are in operation on all outside doors now with windows administered to be closed past 11pm. The premise boundary is regularly monitored for noise levels late at night with bass levels reduced past certain hours.
Car parks are swept on rota, glass is cleared where possible at the time of breakage (unless out of hours).
Decoration has now been toned down after initial impact was gained (marketing stunt).
I myself have a residence not 250mtrs (crow flies) from the pub and have known adjacent "locals" over 30 years, these persons WOULD TELL ME IF ISSUES OF NOISE WERE PRESENT. I would also state that customers are requested to keep noise down on leaving the venue. I do respect your concerns and invite you or/and local residence to come and have a chat. I will offer a free coffee and biscuits. I can inform of all proposals for this locals pub and discuss any issues you may have to resolve them with you. It is after all YOUR "local" and so your input is essential in returning this venue to its correct application in the community, serving as a meeting place. I sense from comments made on this medium that issues could be aired? I know thoughts can prescribe response, some matters should require respect on all sides.
Posted by local resident — 09/10/2007 at 12:40
i live very close to the pub and have to say thati haven't had any problems with the noise levels.
Posted by you must b joking — 09/10/2007 at 9:10
Yes Cat i do agree with you this is not a site for nasty comments,so some i will take back BUT the fact remains it is not going smoothly there.I can hear all the noise at my house at 1.00a.m. in the morning and quite frankly am getting a little fed up with it as are most of the local residents so watch this space!
Posted by cat — 07/10/2007 at 21:18
To "you must be joking".. you are obvioulsly haven't got the guts to put your real name so keep your nasty negative opinions to yourself . You are as they say full of ****. Oh well dave knows that there are more than enough loyal regular customers that love his pub so if i were you go drink somewhere else. this isn't a site for saying nasty comments so do it somewhere else. Dave u know all ya regulars think you are doing a cracking job. We wouldn't come here all the time if we thought different.

could everyone please stop shouting.i,m trying to have a quiet pint.i go 2 the pub in order 2 get away from the normallitys of home life.if i wanted 2 listen 2 a bunch of screaming harpys,i would stay at home and put the ear plugs back in.in ref 2 anyone who may be on the pubwatch,do what i do.ignore them, take it up with your local mp or write a strongly worded letter 2 our prime minister,mr george bush.

As for wanting one of said dreadful munter trucks i really do not feel the need to drive around in a cock extension nor do i need the ego boost. As for my family they well may be freaks but have the common decency to not show them selfs so as not to frighten the general public.
Posted by Andy Robbins — 03/10/2007 at 15:28
I think alot of people on here are being quite unfair!
Whatever people say on here the pub on weekends its allways full and a fun place to be in- i have been going in this pub for a while and compared to recent years the place is in good shape- nice one dave
Posted by regular — 02/10/2007 at 10:25
Not been in for a while then? Colours have changed again like a cameleon... Daves doing a good job, The Pubs better than its been for a long time even the beers good now! Hes a hard worker, don't knock those that try! Its up to him what he drives I bet you wish you had one??? Plus a lot of people from Didcot drink in there, so when you say freaks your probably slagging off your own family!!!? Keep up the good work Dave and Jen.

When will somebody clean up all the broken Glass in the Car(ridiculous truck)Park. It must be in controvention of liscencing laws,as well as being both unsafe and unsightly. This Pub is a discrace. The description "freak show" sums it up.
Posted by you must b joking — 01/10/2007 at 7:56
Have tried this place a couple of times now and i just dont like it,its a freak show, the multicolour walls make you feel queasy as so do most of the customers.Sorry new landlord but you just aint got it go back to playing with your trucks (which by the way look absolutley riddiculous outside the pub, a clear case of "look what i've got).
Posted by bored — 29/09/2007 at 16:02
what u on about the wally rocks... always have a great time in there... it's not jsut the pub it's the people in it that makes it such a great place to be...
Posted by very bored — 27/09/2007 at 23:58
To want to post a reveiw on here I think it helps if you actualy have a good time in the pub but from my past visits i'm prety sure most people when they leave the pub just want to forget they were ever in there.

new barmaid diane is ace friendly and great!!!!
Posted by David — 12/09/2007 at 17:33
To regular, it seems you are not backwards in approaching other "landlords", yet you have chosen not to discuss this matter at the pub concerned?
Please use this medium (Didcot Forum / reviews) for its purpose, reviews not a forum for discussion. In a short time if you are a regular then you will be able to access the forum on thewally web site.
As to pubwatch it is not a licensing requirement on my part for The Wally be a member. My discretion as to my customers admittance will uphold peace in the pub above all.
My door is always open to all, if anyone has a question about the refurb works taking place or any matters regarding The Wally come in and chat with me.
Posted by regular — 12/09/2007 at 12:18
why is lee sheperd who is on pubwatch allowed to drink here? I have asked this question of other pub landlords who say that perhaps you dont know who he is, but that they will bring it up at the next pub watch meeting.
