;Along the Wantage Road a substantial modern double fronted building is home to Splitz, Didcot’s first, and only AA rosetted restaurant. Splitz very much belongs to the neighbourhood, offering high standards at prices that are by no means challenging, and sophisticated enough to appeal to those from a wider area for whom quality cuisine is important.

Décor is chic to the point of cool, with attentive service, chefs trained to Michelin standards, outside seating when the time is right, and a cheerful, buzzy atmosphere overall.

Visited Splitz Saturday night and was looking forward to a good evening following the reviews on this website & after reviewing the extensive menu on Splitz's website. Unfortunately we left before ordering as many starters & main dishes were unavailable - only 3 meat dishes and one of those a chicken salad ! The wine list had more bottles that were unavailable or out of stock than those that remained. Further, the menu presented was a very condensed version of what is published on the website, even before you take into account the dishes that we not available.
In all a disapointing visit. The restaurant is set up very well and is just what Didcot has been needing for some time. As someone who eats out regularly I fully understand that freshly prepared dishes will not be available, only not to this extreme. The manager offered no apology when we gave our reasons for leaving.
Going under ? if so a great shame....

Good to see the standard of restaurant reviews is being maintained - keep it up Mike.

Splitz provided a great Father's Day meal for our family, accommodating 14 month old twins wonderfully. Excellent service and food. The best restaurant in Didcot!

I attended a private birthday party at Splitz on Saturday night and had a great time. Venue classy, food great - amazing buffet. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all it was a great occasion. I hope the birthday boy decides to do it all again in another 10 years time!

The bad reviews are removed by the request of David Baker the owner of the restaurant.

Tried the 5 course tasting menu at Splitz with my husband and two friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed a modern menu at a reasonable price. Dekicious!

Ate at Splitz yesterday for the first time with my closest friends and it was fantastic, Shame it wasn't busier for a Friday night, the food was amazing. I had the Sea Bass which was superb, if i had to give any criticisms i would say that the bone in my Sea Bass wasn't the nicest surprise in the world. But I'm not one to complain so i let that one go as the desserts were outstanding and beautifully presented.
Staff were very friendly and the Manager was a delight and very welcoming.
Will definitely be going there again soon!

It is not often that you eat a dinner of this quality! Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. Worth every penny. It was an evening we shall remember for a very long time, not least because it was to celebrate our younger son's 18th. Fabulous, you MUST try it! The birthday cake is still going...

My boyfriend and I decided to try Splitz last night as it was within walking distance and we were yet to go there. From start to finish the night was perfect. The atmosphere was gorgeous, relaxed and sophisticated, the staff were polite and welcoming, and the food was superb. The presentation of both the food and the restaurant was well thought out and classy. The menu was fairly small and it was a struggle to choose as they all sounded so nice. I can highly recommend the goats' cheese starter and the chicken for mains. The quality of food at Splitz is what you'd expect to find in the city centre, not down a street in Didcot, which makes it even better. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food and service, which was friendly and professional. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

Wow - a little slice of elegance and sophistication in Didcot. Wonderful, attentive, thoughtful staff, we were so well looked after - thank you. The food was just lovely, so fresh and interesting. A clever use of flavours and combinations. There were two menus: Things such as fish & chips, bangers & mash, then their a la carte. We plumped for the latter. I did get a little overwhelmed by the variety of dressings & sauces on the main course but that said it was just lovely. Try it for sure!

There is a big difference between an adverse review - which stays on (see below) - and fabrications which include personal attacks not only on the restaurant staff but also on other conributors to this site - which get removed.
Hope this clears this up for you.

Why have a review page for restaurants when somehow all the bad ones keep being removed ????????? and by who????????. if a pl;ace has gone down a bit then we as the paying public need to know

Food was excellent with not a single complaint. The restaurant is not busy in the week so it does lack a little atmosphere but all in all a very enjoyable evening. Highly recommended.

Splitz is a very stylish restaurant which adds a bit of class to Didcot. Service was good and the food was like a work of art on the plate. The flavours were just right complimenting each dish. I think the dessert was the best part of the evening, it was to die for and I would highly recommend the caramelised bread & butter pudding. I will definately be visiting again and fancy trying the lunchtime menu on my next visit. All in all a wonderful dinning experience.

We had a wonderful evening at Splitz restaurant in Didcot, it has come a long way since I last visited 9 months ago, the food was amazing and the service was excellent.

Posted by Manager — 12/04/2008 at 18:43
The restaurant has been open for just 18 months and has never had a female manager so I suspect you're getting confused with somewhere else.

Posted by disapointed — 12/04/2008 at 17:53
a few years ago just after opening there was a person who could have been a female manager, she was rude and agressive, and actualy told me to shut up when i was on the phone to her, as i was calling up about a job, which luckily i did not get. after she very rudly told me that she wasnt interested. i have never been there and never will go.

We had a fantastic girls evening out you did not feel you were in Didcot they let us chat on and did not feel as we were under any hurry super waitress

Just wanted to say I live in Stadhampton and so am a regular at the Crazy Bear for location. However, I'm a regular at Splitz for quality of food and service. The prices are Splitz are far, far better than anywhere else comparable. I'd happily pay Crazy Bear prices, but it's much, much more reasonable.

Fabulous food, generous portions, great service, friendly staff and wonderful ambience. I can highly recommend this fine restaurant and plan to return each and every time I am in the area.

Posted by Manager — 06/04/2008 at 11:17
Couple of things. Can I just clarify that we are NOT a memebr of the AA. It is IMPOSSIBLE to pay for an AA rosette. Accomdation is a different matter - hoteliers have to pay for memebership and only then will their establishment be rated. Restaurants however are chosen by the AA based on quality of food AND service. No money changes hands. Restaurants cannot even request an inspection - it is all in the hands of the AA inspectors.
Secondly - sh - please tell me the date and time you were in and who served you. Your account sounds extremely unlikey and I would like to investigate to see if I can get to the bottom of what - if anything - really happened.

Posted by sh — 05/04/2008 at 19:58
The last meal I had at Splitz was a Sunday roast. The food was superb but sadly the same cannot be said about the staff and service. I appreciate this restaurant is trying to create a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere but the staff were so relaxed you could have knocked them down with a feather. We were shown to our table whilst our food was being served still holding our coats. The cost of the food at this restaurant is comparable with places like The Cazy Bear, however, such restaurants would never provide such a poor, laid back service.

Posted by AA Rosette — 05/04/2008 at 16:16
You have to pay the membership rate, and you will be in the list of the "AA rosette" the good restaurant's they dont need this title.... they are busy anyway.... the best marketing.... are the CUSTOMERS

I absolutely love this place and it’s now my favourite place to eat. I recommend it highly.

Peter, if you search and book through the Times website you'll find there is a promotion at off peak times (10% off and a glass of champagne I think) until April 10th. I doubt you'll get a concession just for being skint!

seems like melissa isnt so ready to complain now then !!!!!well done to keith for acting so quickly in response to a customer complaint.i think you are admirable for that ,keith.does seem a shame that melissa was rather unpleasant in her response though.also,it might of been better if she had contacted you direct at restaurant if she felt so unhappy with the service,.

Posted by Manager — 23/03/2008 at 14:06
No - sorry if you misunderstood. I'm not working today - and I have internet at home as well as at work.
Are you able tell me when you were in?
Keith

Are you that empty that you can reply to me ten minutes after my posting, at lunch time on Easter Sunday?

Posted by Manager — 23/03/2008 at 13:31
Hi Melissa.
I'm sorry if you feel we let you down on your birthday. Could you let me know when it was that you were in so that I can see what went wrong? We never normally have a problem with service, so I'd really like to check this out.
Keith

Posted by Melissa — 23/03/2008 at 13:18
Food was ok but service was terrible. Had to keep going to the bar to ask for drinks. Could not cope with having two groups in at the same time - completely ruined my birthday meal.

Do you do a reduced price for unemployed people who are on a low budget.

What a find! I can’t believe we have just bought a house in Didcot and thought we would never find a nice place to eat. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch service and the portions are certainly plentiful. Barely room for dessert, though I do suggest that room is made, as these are delightful. The décor is contemporary yet comfortable, and the a la carte menu insists you come back to try the rest of the menu. Keep up the good work.

N "AA" ROSETTE RESTAURANT IN DIDCOT? ABSOLUTELY! OPEN ABOUT 18 MONTHS, THIS WAS A GREAT LEAP OF FAITH HERE AND IT HAS PAID OFF HANDSOMELY. STEP OFF THE MAIN ROAD INTO A DIFFERENT WORLD. THERE IS A WELCOMING FEELING AND VERY FRIENDLY STAFF. TAKE A DRINK SITTING ON VERY COMFY SETEES IN A RELAXING ATMOSPHERE WHILE PERUSING THE MENU. THERE IS A MOUTH WATERING A LA CARTE MENU, BUT THERE IS ALSO AN EQUALLY APPETIZING "EXPRESS MENU" WHICH HAS 2 COURSES PLUS COFFEE AT £12.50 OR THREE COURSES AT £14.95. WE HAD THE "EXPRESS" AND WERE TOTALLY DELIGHTED WITH THE PRESENTATION AND QUALITY OF THE FOOD. I WOULD CERTAINLY SAY "BRILLIANT". THE CHEF IS RAYMOND BLANC TRAINED - AND IT SHOWS! THERE IS A TASTING MENU WHERE THE CHEF WILL DISCUSS YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES AND COME UP WITH A 10 COURSE DELIGHT! MAYBE NEXT TIME!

Last two reviews - what a load of cobblers!! Bet you can't even tell us what you had to eat.

Posted by Julie — 15/02/2008 at 19:18
Had to come and try out this Restaurant..... over all the place is clean and tidy , carnt say the same about the staff!!!! Not well presented and could do with buying some sure for men. although the food wad presented well they could do with making the portions bigger i.e big plates not much on them (just like the hungry horse). I did feel that i was rushed by the staff to eat my food and go. I was not too impresed when we left as the first thing i noticed was the kitchen staff out side the main entrance smoking. This realy does not look good. I do agree with the last person New Manager and New chefs.
Sorry splitz but this sight is a review sight and that is my review.

Dear Mr Manager
i am refering to your opening times. Please do something with the flower pot out side as it does let the front of house down.

Posted by m — 02/02/2008 at 18:39
keep up the good work ,its great to have a top class restaurant like you in town.there are enough cheap and cheerful places for people to eat in,its refreshing to know you can dine out and experience great culinary skills so locally.not all of didcot want steak chips and cheap lager.oh.,and im not a member of staff at splitz by the way

Posted by manager — 02/02/2008 at 12:26
Hi John - what about the opening do we need to change? And I think our service is pretty much sorted - should come and try us and let me know if you have a problem.

Posted by John — 01/02/2008 at 19:18
Better get the service right you've got Competition coming to town. you will need to change your opening.

Great original food and good service. Why are some people so negative when they have never even tried Splitz? It seems like a knee-jerk reaction to put down anything new or good in Didcot or some kind of professional jealousy. I tell you, we should be proud of having restaurant this good in the town. It's better than anything in Abingdon.

At last, a decent eatery in Didcot! I cannot believe we have not noticed this establishment before. The food is superb with non-intrusive yet attentive service in pleasant and modern surroundings. The portion sizes are just right, and every dish we tried was great, definitely enticing us back for another visit. I am looking forward to try the taster and banquet menus with friends in the future. Great value!

I was not impreased with the service of the food, Who's the old lady that works there

Posted by Phil Blunt — 28/12/2007 at 17:24
I've dined twice at this eatery and both times have been superb, in terms of food, service and vibe. For me it's toss-up between this place and The Kingswell Hotel for best local eating out. I am pround of Didcot and I thank the owners of Splitz for opening.

I have a complaint!!
6 months ago I never had trouble getting a table here - now I'm having to book at least a week in advance to be totally sure of getting a table at the weekend!
Just kidding - great to see the way it's going. keep up the good work

What a find! This place is a little gem. Superb food - actually superb doesn't cover it, the food's to die for! Great, attentive service. Excellent wine list. And realistic prices.

Posted by Cola — 13/12/2007 at 21:37
Would never use her recommendations, the woman clearly has a downer on Didcot and never been to Cibo for example. As far as business ethics go, there aren’t any. Don’t believe me then ask around a bit because you won’t find the answers here that’s for sure.

Posted by Big Al & Little Norm — 13/12/2007 at 16:02
Went on the strength of Helen Peacock's recomendation in the Herald. If she says somewhere's good - it's good. She's not wrong, fantastic food and superb service and the prices are astonishingly resonable!!
I don't know the owners nor do I know about their business ethics, but I do know that whoever they are, they have a great restaurant - and after all, that's what this site is about.
Regards to Jane

Posted by Emma — 10/12/2007 at 21:50
i have given it a try, food was second rate and so was the service plus there's a big question mark over the owners of this establishment's business ethics.

Posted by Gemma — 05/12/2007 at 22:32
Fantastic food and brilliant service, i will definatly be coming again and recommending people.
A comment to Chris and Mike before you pass judgement on this place maybe you should give it a try!
This restaurant is 10/10 i would recommend everyone to try it!

Delicious food, great service. Highly recommended.

Posted by Splitz Manager — 21/11/2007 at 10:19
Chris - not sure what industry you're in where awards mean nothing mean nothing more than marketing ploys, but I'd just like to clarify a few things about the AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence(to give it its full title).
You cannot choose to apply for an AA Rosette, the AA choose you, based on the inspectors local knowledge and on unsolicited reviews from the AA membership. There is no money involved - we are not members of any AA organisation - and therefore these awards can also not be purchased. They are based purely on (as it says) culinary excellence.
However, I would urge any other viewers of this website to do as Chris says and check out the AA website.
You will see that we are one of only 14 restaurants in South Oxfordshire with a Rosette Award, and one of only 60 restaurants in the whole of Oxfordshire with a Rosette Award.
I think that is something that not only we should be proud of, But Didcot should be proud of as well. I'm tired of hearing Didcot run down time and time again so lets applaud the owners of Splitz by having the balls to give the town something to celebrate.

Posted by Chris — 20/11/2007 at 20:26
Andy all you have to do is look on the AA website and you'll find this gaff is not the only one in South Oxfordshire with an AA rating and if my industry is anything to by these awards are nothing more than a marketing ploy.
But fair play if they can make a go of it fine but judging by the personal face to face views I have heard it tells a different story.

Posted by andy — 20/11/2007 at 1:05
after reading christopher grays comments in the paper i had to try it thank god a decent restaurant in the south of oxford the service was great and the food was just unreal. To put a restaurant like this in didcot is excellent and to put a chef from manoir even better, presentation was just unreal flavours clean just amaizing as a bit of a foodie i eat out in a different restaurant every 2 weeks with my partner and this has to be the second best restaurant in oxfordshire (le manoir 1st) i had scallops to start and my partner had crab and grapefruit terrine, for mains she had sirloin steak and i chose sea bass which was so fresh and curry oil worked well with fish and coconut foam. i will make a habbit of coming to didcot more only for the restaurant and not for the night life

Got to agree with jj. Didcot has long had a very bad reputation. No-one understood why I wanted to move here - but now look. A cinema, shopping centre, arts centre coming and now we have a restaurant that the AA have recognised as one of the best in Oxfordshire! Didcot really is up and coming. Thanks Splitz owners and all the other people who have had the courage of their convictions and are helping to make this town something to be proud of.

Posted by jj — 11/11/2007 at 1:13
Hey Mike - I assume you know that the restaurant area is at the back of the building and can't be seen from the road. I was there tonight and every table was full, but if you just "pass past" you wouldn't know that. You should try it sometime - really deserves its rosette. Nice to see that Didcot is finally starting to attract this kind of establishment in. Pity that some people find it easier to knock those who try to do something good, rather than giving them their support.

Posted by Mike — 10/11/2007 at 22:37
Nice to see that the chef has had something to do by gaining an award , however if this restruant was packed to the brim every night and the chef was turning out the same quality on every order than this award would be worth its weight. When ever i pass past there never seems to be anyone in there. either they arnt as good as they make out or the latest press statement is what we in the trade call A LAST ATTEMP TO PULL THEM IN .
