What is wrong with the staff at this pub? Maybe its the minumum wage that makes them so sour, but seriously, i've met happier people at wakes!
Food was awful, chips looked like they had been cooked 15 mins before they had been served to me. I wouldn't usually review a pub online, but had such a nasty time here that i was eagar to see if i might have had an 'off' day here, doesnt look like I have. Good luck Ladygrove, I'm one less customer you wont have to BOTHER with

I have to agree they have had the monopoly for far to long on the ladygrove, bring on some competition !! better still go to the football club beer is cheaper and the staff dont have an attitude problem.
Failing that move to the proper part of town and drink in a proper pub like the oak!!
Posted by What! — 23/04/2008 at 12:09
Are we talking about the same pub...I went in there for the first time the other Friday...staff so sour faced thought my drink would be off. Rather chat than serve customers, I won't go in again...I won't be missed as they never bothered about their cusomers anyway. Trouble is they have no competition on that estate so if you want a quick drink you've no choice.

No one seems to like this pub, Green King have allowed them to keep it though, they must be doing something right. I dont understand it though. My visit there wasnt great. The barstaff demanded "What do you want" and then went on to the next customer in the same fashion
Posted by dorothy — 08/04/2008 at 21:14
had a meal on sun, tastless salmon 6 new potatoes rolling on the plate small salad what a waste of money, a little more time with presentation and a few peas would have filled the plate + halve of a tomato to put colour on the plate

I went into the ladygrove for the first time in a while as i work away alot. well has'nt it gone down hill fast. i agree with all the other comments about the food but the staff were my main concern. they do ignore you and you have to wait a very long time to be served. but its there attitude that is worse than the wait. they talk to each other and treat customers like a pain. the managment are behind the bar and join in with the chat!! im glad i only use it very rarley and thats just because its close to home
Posted by customer — 18/03/2008 at 11:33
the pub looks so much nicer after the re-furb! i think all it needs now is a new floor in the restaurant side, maybe wood as its easy to keep clean. very happy customer

Disappointed. Waited for a long time to be served (which i dont mind when a pub is busy) but got pushed aside by customers who arrived after me, seems the bar staff knew them. Well done. Would rather drink at the sprat.

We used to go to this place lots and lots in the late summer 2007 when we were new to the area. It seemed the ideal place to eat with two small children, the play area great fun and often some other families in there and so some familiar faces. Never had problems being served but then we were in at quiet times, midday on a week day or late afternoon weekends.
However, since Christmas we noticed a dramatic change in the quality of food. It's pretty simple heated through stuff anyway like chips, burgers etc.... but the last few times everything on our plate seemed old, overcooked, hard or stale whether it was meat, bread or veg! YUCH! Like it's been stored for way too long, or just overcooked in old oil.
We haven't been back, purely because of the terrible two meals we had in there recently. What's happened?!!!
Posted by well said — 14/02/2008 at 22:34
i totally agree with you and if your not a regular face then you wait for ages to be served load of ????
Posted by jk — 14/02/2008 at 19:48
This pub is terrible. The food is horrible even after having to wait 45mins to get it. The staff are more interested in chatting amongst themselves than serving the customers.... and, if your not a friend of theirs they will simply ignore you! I never had a more ugly pub experience. Theres work to be done here. No one wants to enter a pub and be greeted with a miserable face, i felt like i interrupting the staff day by just asking for a drink. Will never go back. And will tell whoever i can about my experience at the Ladygrove Pub. Truely awful.
Posted by wont be back — 06/02/2008 at 20:03
went to ladygrove at the weekend for dinner with my little girl. had to wait 40 min for the food then the chicken was like rubber when it finally arrived. was disgusting!

To the villager who wrote from the cricketers. I apologise for not getting in touch with you all concerning Steve's passing away.I did put a note in the local paper because i felt it the best way other than word of mouth to let people know. I do know Steve enjoyed his time at the Cricketers and he spoke of his friends fondly. Steve was very poorly for his last few weeks and in hospital, and myself and my husband also Steve spent a lot of hours day and night with him. He passed away not scared or alone as I was holding his hand. He will be very sadly missed by lots of people all over the county and his family in London and America. Please again except my aplogises.

To Villager..I am Steve's sister and I live in the USA. Thankyou for the condolensces and thoughts. It's so nice to know Steve is remembered. Janice was a wonderful friend to Steve and had so much to sort out while he was so ill and when he passed I am sure she too will apreciate your thoughts. Thankyou again we all miss Steve so very much.

i was in the pub over the christmas holidays and what a awfull time i had!! Half the food was no longer in stock when i did get my food it ws burnt and cold ( very clever indeed chef!!) its no good complaining to the managment they are never there or refuse to believe there staff could do anyhing wrong. you wait forever at the bar to be ignored by the bar staff chatting and getting thier own drink. i saw in the ladygrove news a article by a "scott" i presume the area manager. well he needs to read this and all the other complaints soon. i think im right in saying a least one of the complimentry comments was made by one of the bar staffs parents so may be a bit one sided eh!!

For the second year Tina and John have ensured our Christmas day was superb. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent day! Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the day so special. A special mention to all the chefs who worked in a kitchen so hot many would have given up. Richard and his team excelled again. Thanks!!

I would like to thank the many many people that attended Steve Kirby's Funeral and wake last Thursday. Steve would have been so happy to see so many friends and staff there. I would also like to thank Tina, John and Leah and the rest of the staff that worked so hard to organise the wake for Steve. I had the pleasure of knowing the real Steve Kirby the kind, warm hearted and very funny man. I was privilaged to be holding his hand when he passed away. He will be missed by many people and has left a lot of his friends all the better for knowing him.

well rumour is that the ball pit is set to close.and i have to disagree with you that food is swifly delivered.
Posted by Ladygrove Mum — 03/11/2007 at 23:16
I am appalled at some of the comments on this site concerning the Ladygrove pub. Where else in Didcot can you find a pub with a childrens' ball pit, childrens' menu, bouncy castle in the summer, special events such as Halloween parties and an a entertainment pack for children diners? The landlord and land lady are always accomnadating and friendly, the staff well trained and the food swiftly delivered.I fully agree that children should not be in the bar after 9pm at night. As a ladygrove resident of twenty years, I should remind people what it was like on the estate before we had the shops, sports centre and pub. It was a housing estate without a soul!
Posted by Invisible Punter — 30/10/2007 at 14:27
The Ladygrove really isn't a nice place to go. I don't care about the food, because I would never eat there, but when all I want to do is go out for a quiet drink with a friend, it is nice to actually get served! As a non-regular, I tend to get ignored. Last time I was stood at the bar for 7 minutes (yes, I timed it!) and I was ignored by the barmaid. She saw me, and it was obvious I was waiting to be served - it wasn't exactly busy - but every time a regular came up to the bar that she knew, she'd serve them and ignore me again! I left in the end and went to the Barley Mow instead - what a difference!

It appears that my original comments posted have caused upset. I agree with previous entries that as a public forum comments should revolve around the actual venue/service and not be directed to people and individuals Personal attacks have no place on any site and I personally find them extremely rude, distressing and unnecessary. The sad part is that whilst it’s been advised to complain to staff about service, when staff are approached I can honestly say that the response is always extremely negative and abrupt, which actually makes it hard work to complain as you genuinely feel that its falling on deaf ears. I work within a highly focused customer service environment and can say with all honesty that I would not last 5 minutes in my current position if I adopted the attitude that is regularly demonstrated by the staff. It appears to me that this is a common issue raised throughout & may be its time the landlord/lady of the pub took note of constructive comments. The food at the pub has gone down in standard; to the point that I will no longer be eating here, but again this is a common complaint and surely should be taken up with the higher ranks within the company. If we adapted a more European approach to eating & socialising out of the home, where families are made to feel welcome, a warm atmosphere is provided and kids are encouraged then there would be no need for message boards like this. On a final note I would like to point out that I do not encourage my children to be surrounded by drunken people as so elegantly put by an earlier posting, but encourage my children to be social and enjoy being part of a family who can socialise together. Comments like that should be kept to yourself as you really have no grounds to make such a remark that casts doubt on anyone’s ability as a parent.

i think the ladygrove needs a fresh lick of paint and a new carpet, other than that the food is good, the staff are friendly and it is kept clean. what more can you ask for?
Posted by nan — 19/10/2007 at 14:09
drunks? lol, there never any one in ther even drinking after 9pm let alone drunk!!!!! the pub is a miserable child unfriendly place and i agree ,it is not family orientated, even when they had in the past some kids entertainment on ,we were made to feel like a nuisance for being there.a few years back you could have xmas eve in there with kids and a disco but thats stopped too now.why ?
Posted by legal info — 18/10/2007 at 19:16
I think you will find that it is a liscensing requirement and not just something that the Ladygrove have decided to do, they actually have to enforce the rule.
Posted by Mother of 2! — 18/10/2007 at 13:43
I am miffed as to why the kids at what is marketed as 'child friendly' pub are asked to leave at 9pm? The staggering thing is that after the 9pm watershed the pub is empty - which leaves me to ask why? When you go into a family focused pub you expect just that, families. However on a weekend evening, when most working adults look forward to an evening out with the kids, you are requested to leave at such an early hour. Surely it should be the decision of parents as to when is an appropriate time to leave? When I last visited The Ladygrove a staff member informed me that I would not be served unless my kids left the pub! My children are 10 & 11 years old and as such are not able to leave without an adult - so what option did that leave us but to all leave as a family. I have no doubt that The Ladygrove will offer some explanation to back up their no kids after 9pm rule but in the meantime I am baffled as to why a family pub has such stringent and seemingly unnecessary regulations

Part and parcel of running a pub is providing good customer service in the form of your bar staff. People should be able to comment on the staff if they feel they are being treated poorly. As long as people aren't commenting on your staff's personal live's and keep in in a work context then I don't see the problem.
Posted by The Ladygrove — 10/09/2007 at 21:19
We appreciate your comments about the business and would like your feedback on the pub. This way we can give all our customers what they want or do our best. We do feel however the comments about staff are a little offensive and if there is a problem you can come in and speak to us about the matter. But please keep opinions you have regarding staff or customers from our forum.

The Ladygrove is my new local by all accounts. I take it this is about as upmarket as it gets in Didcot (no offence to the pub at all, really nice bar staff, just not my usual kind of place)? Does everyone that prefers a slightly trendier scene go into Oxford then?
Posted by weekday evening regular — 04/06/2007 at 10:57
came across this site and thought i would put a true comment about the pub having used it fiarly regulary over the past 4 years. i have seen a few managers come and go, but the current teem are by far the best, the staff are friendly and always have a smile,I eat all over didcot and oxfordshire and therefore feel right to comment. well done keep up the good work. (ps. not sure about all of the new menu tho)
